Rosario González Férez, first Spanish woman to be chosen chair of the Atomic Molecular Physics and Optics commission of the IUPAP

  • The researcher from the Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics department and the Carlos I Institute of Theoretical and Computational Physics from the University of Granada is the first woman to be chosen to preside the Atomic Molecular Physics and Optics Commission.
  • The IUAP is the only International Scientific Union of global reach dedicated to physics, connecting physicists from every field and country.

Rosario González Férez, researcher from the Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics department and the Carlos I Institute of Theoretical and Computational Physics, has been chosen as chair for the 2022-2024 frame of the C15 Commission of Atomic Molecular Physics and Optics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

The Pure and Applied Physics Union (IUPAP) is the only International Scientific Union of global reach focused on physics, connecting physicists from every field and country. Its mission is to help the global development of physics, improve international cooperation in its research field and contribute to the application of physics to solve problems that are interesting to humanity as a whole.

Among its main objectives are: promote physics as an essential tool for development and sustainability, improve the teaching of physics, specially in developing countries, improve diversity and inclusion in this area, improving participation and recognition of women and underrepresented groups. It also promotes the free movement of scientists and open access to data, openness, honesty and integrity in practice, application and promotion of physics, and international agreements about symbols, units, nomenclature and norms.

In particular, the C15 commission has the objective of promoting information and opinion transmission between the members of the international scientific community in the area of Atomic and Molecular Physics and Optics. This commission helps to organize two of the most important international conferences in this area of knowledge, and offers an annual award to Young Scientists that had made original and prominent contributions in the field of Atomic Molecular Physics and Optics.

Said commission is formed by 14 international scientists specialized in Atomic and Molecular Physics and Optics. The researcher is the only Spanish female representative, and the first woman to become chair of the commission. The designation of Rosario González-Férez as president of this Comission will improve international visibility to the community of Spanish scientist working in Atomic and Molecular Physics and Optics.
